Frankl told a story of a man who had lost his wife and was in unbearable agony. Frankl didn’t analyze his childhood, but asked the man, “What if you had died?” The man answered, “She would have suffered terribly.” Frankl said, “Such a suffering has been spared her, and it was you who have spared her this suffering – to be sure, at the price that now you have to survive and mourn her.” By instilling meaning, the suffering did not disappear, but it was made bearable for this man.
