Moleskine: tl;dr. Learn to let things go. The buddhists teach that desire is the root of suffering. They say that because we desire things we become attached to them and then when we get them they let us down, or we don’t get them at all, or we lose them. Their impermanence or our failure to achieve them makes us unhappy. I think they get this partly right, but desire isn’t bad. It’s just that we desire the wrong things. If we desire only God, then we will never be disappointed, but too often we desire other things: success in work, happy obedient children, affirmation from other humans. And those things fade, disappoint, fail to appear. We become attached to them and they do cause us suffering. But if we stay attached to God; if our desire is only for God, then we can love those others things without being attached. When they disappoint, or fade, or we never get them, we won’t suffer because our desire – and attachment – are only in God.
COT: Prayers for Spielberg’s green card interview, for Mr Roboto’s relationship with his brother, Jailbreak’s recovery.
