Moleskine: Graduation is a rite of passage in which we take our students and transform them into college graduates. It’s a beautiful ceremony in which everyone ends up on the same side in the end. Some student have sailed across the line with commendations and award and great aplomb. Others have dragged themselves (or been dragged) across the line and barely made it. Most are somewhere in between. And I didn’t make this spiritual analogy when I said it this morning, but I think there’s a image here of our spiritual lives. In the end, no one is “more graduated” than another person. Everyone who graduates is graduated. And there are good reasons to work hard and strive for success and enjoy one’s college time in ways that bring accolades, but in the end, everyone receives the same award. For those who seek the reward of eternal life with God, there is no being “more saved.” Whether you sail across the ‘finish line’ with accolades and recognition, or you barely get those final credits in, you all get the same prize. Sometimes it’s enough to know that you can make it and, in the end, we all get the same thing.
