9.2.19 – Labor Day Bonus Rucking

Full credit to Noodles for asking Saturday “So, it’s a holiday weekend… we’re doing something a little extra, right?” With the general agreement of the group, we pushed it a little bit farther, going for a good 5.25 miles before breakfast.

As we assembled in the deep mist of an early September Gloom, Noodles, Triple XXX, and Crunch were surprised to hear a child cry out from the car as Gummi Bear got his gear ready (ruck, stroller and 1.5 year-old FNG-Gummi Worm). Then we settled in for a good stroll and good conversation as the mist rolled by and the sun slowly started to brighten up the morning. On our way back we even got some pictures to turn out!

Everything went well, but YHC forgot to bring the flag along (left in the car). So no bonus points for the Ruck Your Colors September Challenge. Log them with a more competent Q, gents! (I did rep a Goruck American Flag spearhead for the ruck, if that counts.)

8.29.19 Leggy legs and a little back and shoulders too…

And the ring alluded him….in all seriousness my wedding ring did go missing during this workout. Right now it is somewhere in the tall grasses of AO Mastodon, cold and alone.

At 0527 all 5 paxs that had given an HC were present; TBTF, Captain Crunch, Archive, Noodles, and gummibear.

Warm Up; We jogged around playground hill area; doing butt kicks, high knees, and karaoke. Archive was perplexed by such a low key warm up, but after all it is a warm up and it is a bit early in the morn. Were no spring chickens anymore.

Thang 1: IC Pull ups/ Partner Assisted: 3 sets of 10 followed by last man standing or hanging contest. This contest proved extremely short.

Thang 2: Circuit (3 sets) 25 Box jumps/8 reverse rows

Mosey on to the Coupons

Grab Coupon and conduct lunges w/ coupon overhead to bottom of hill

Thang 3: 10 Coupon Get ups or 20 Coupon squat thrusters, 20 coupon floor wipers, 20 coupon pulls. Leave Coupon and run up hill. At the top of hill 10 glute bridges, and 20 skater squats. 2 sets of circuit (2nd set at 50% reps for coupon exercises)

Thang 4: Legs of destiny: 15 airsquats, 15 jump squats, 15 lunges, 15 bouncing lunges.

NOR/COT: Prayers: Archive interview, TBTF health, Noodles M & Baby, prayers for those present; Gummi Bear upcoming fall schedule.

8.26.19 – Do the MACV-SOG!

In the early grey of a gloomier than normal morning, 4 PAX (Triple XXX, Noodles, Archive, Crunch) met to complete the final workout for the month. As the rain made up its mind, they moseyed around in the rain until lightning stationed them under the pavilion for the remainder of the workout.

MACV-SOG Workout: (reps split evenly between 2 PAX)

  • 100 no push-up burpees (ruck on)
    – then 2 rounds –
  • 24 ruck swings
  • 64 push-ups (ruck off)
  • 24 ruck squats
  • 64 sit-ups (ruck off)

After that, a bonus mile to round out the time.

It was nice having a bit of weather impact (but not stop) the workout for the first time in a while. We’ll see what challenges they have cooked up for September!

COR/NOR/COT: Noodles looking forward to the imminent arrival of 2.0 — 2.0s starting school this week and last week — prayers for good community and good learning environments

8.24.19 – Homage to FOMO

As of late a lot of HIMs have been out commission, out due to illness or just traveling out of town. That left Noodles to hold down AO Mastodon, plant the F3 Shovel and flag colors. Let’s not forget having to step up and Q for the day. Saturday’s BC workout still managed to have 3 HIMs HC for the day. Today was a small tribute to Noodle’s FNG workout as well as some exercises to remind us of those not present! Some may be out but today’s HIMs surely remembered you!

WoR: Motivators x7, Ballerina Toe Squats x20. Moseyed over to the route that Noodles will never forget!

Station 1 – Burpees

Station 2 – Imperial Walkers

Station 3 – Step Ups

Station 4 – Lunges

Station 5 – Squats

Station 6 – ATMs – Plank position, Alternating Shoulder Touches (4 count), 1 Tempo Merkin, (down 1-2-3, up on 4), 1 fast Merkin)

Thang #2Good Ol’ Hoffa!

3 Rounds

Monkey Humpers x10 (bottom) – Sprint – Gas Pumps (top). Repeat.

NoR: Jazz Hands, Too Big To Fail, Noodles (QIC)

CoT: Jazz Hands – Prayers for grandmother and second surgery on her brain to help w/ motor skills d/t Parkinson’s, safe travels to California. TBTF – Prayers for motivation on the job. Noodles – Prayers for health, 26 days until 2.0 arrives.

8.19.19 – The Mata Mile (ft. Bertha & Jerry)

In the Gloom of another Monday, 4 PAX (Gummi Bear, Noodles, Triple XXX, Capn Crunch) met up for another Goruck Guerrilla themed challenge: The Mata Mile.

Part 1: The Shuttle Run

In pairs of two, the partners circled the west island loop with a station on opposite sides. One partner rucked (AFAP) to the opposite side (400m) while the other performed the exercise, then, upon reaching that side, the second partner set out to catch up, while the first partner performed the exercise. Repeat for four exercises (two loops around the lake)

One partner Rucks 400m while the other does exercise:

  • Ruck Squats
  • Plank Hold
  • Ruck Lunges
  • Flutter Kicks

Part 2: The Sandbag Mile

Using a sandbag or other team weight, ruck one mile, alternating who carries the weight. You must finish as a team.

After that, we loaded up with some team weight a set off for the mile around the park with our good friends Jerry (52lbs of water) and Bertha (85lbs of sand). Gummi Bear and Noodles ran off with Jerry, swapping between them as needed. Triple XXX and Capn Crunch teamed up to carry Bertha between them, alternating hands as their fingers complained.

With time getting away from us, YHC on Team Tortoise was going to direct Team Hare to take the short mile, but they got ahead of things, and were feeling pretty good about themselves, so they ran the full Archive mile, while Bertha persuaded Triple XXX and I to cut it a bit shorter. While taking the shortcut, our fingers had had enough, and in the spirit of teamwork I opted to give my ruck to Triple XXX and just shoulder Bertha for the last 1/3 mile. Team Hare easily caught up to us and we finished as a team.

One more Monday and one more Ruck Challenge workout to go!

8.17.19 – A Day At The Arcade

6 HIMs made the HC for another suspenseful Q to be led by Noodles. All those w/ the HC for the day were left questioning what to expect. Video games are for entertainment and have no physical benefits whatsoever. Well, today was the day to bring the creativity and present something w/ the physical benefit that most men seek. This would be a day with far less enjoyment than what most remember from their favorite video games growing up. It would be a day to either remember or forget. Noodles may have started F3 w/ spaghetti legs but today HIMs left w/ Noodle arms!

WoR: Motivators x8.

Moseyed our way over to pick up our coupons for the day. Continued our mosey to Noodles’ designated gaming space and area. Live and in the flesh! AO-Mastodon has it all, including a rock formation perfect for today’s games!

Thang #1 – Centipede – Bear crawls – weaving between rocks until reaching the opposite side. Perform designated exercises at opposite side and weave between rocks back to the starting point.

Round #1 – Bear Crawl – Wide Arm Merkins x100

Round #2 – Bear Crawl – Merkins x100

Round #3 – Bear Crawl – Closed Diamond Merkins x25

Round #4 – Bear Crawl – Jackknife Merkins x25

Thang #2 – Wrecking Crew & Replay Action – Introducing Wheelbarrows to our workout arsenal. Great partner exercise. Modify as needed by switching in and out of wheelbarrow position. Perform exercise at opposite side and back to starting position, 1 Round.

Round #1 – Wheelbarrow – Coupon Press x100, Halt when called by Q, Pressed for time and Recover.

MoM: Nothing better when finishing a workout than maxing out w/ the following: Raise the Roof until Halted by Q & Arm Circles until Halted by Q.

To make thing more interesting, HIMs did not get off easy. Guided imagery made this MoM memorable as HIMs were asked to focus on some of their greatest and challenging exercises and Ruck days. Great psychological game to test HIMs mind, body, desire to quit or give up and motivation to push harder. GAME OVER!

NoR: XXX Family Restaurant, Chaser, Gummi Bear, Captain Crunch, Archive, Noodles (QIC).

CoT: Captain Crunch – prayers for upcoming reviews so that he may be just, fair and honest w/ constructive criticism and feedback. Chaser – praise report and prayers to God for his provision according to his time and when he sees our needs. Noodles – prayers for healing process at work during difficult season and focus on future opportunities.

08.15.19 Autumn Approaches… and so does Noodles Saturday Q.

The mornings are getting cooler, the darkness looms longer, the ring is lost, but all hope is not.

Noodles and Gummibear arrived a bit early, thinking that they were the only ones present. When out of the mist two figures, nay two creatures approached. It was none other than Archive and Capt’n Crunch who were just finishing a pre-workout; those sly dogs.

With 4 pax present; Noodles, Archive, Crunch, and Gummibear. the workout commenced at 0527.

Warm-up

We moseyed in a gaggle around the playground loop for a nice jog and circled up;

50 IC side straddle hops, 50 IC overhead arm claps, 10 dive dumbers, 10 push up and rotations, 50 IC leg spreaders, 20 IC flutter kicks.

Thang 1 – Beginning at the coupon staging area

10 get-ups w/coupons, 30 floor wipers w/coupon, 40 coupon presses, bear crawl coupon drag to playground, 50 box jumps.

Thang 2

I/C assisted pull ups; 12, 10, 6.

Legs of Destiny: 25 air squats, 25 jump squats, 25 lunges, 25 bouncing lunges.

Cool Down: 15 reverse bar rows, pick up coupon and group shuffle back to staging area.

COT: Archive; Thanksgiving for new hires at work, Noodles; prayer for current job situation and future opportunities, Crunch; for recovery from illness, Gummibear; that we would live joyfully and work with all our might for the glory of God.

Coupon Getups
Crunch and Noodles bear crawl
Crunch using a coupon for Airsquats
Cool down Rows. Noodles may be praying for wisdom for his upcoming saturday Q and how he can combine as many chest exercises into one session as possible. Feel that chest burn!

8.12.19 – The Hammer and the Red Dawn

5:30 saw 4 PAX (Archive, Noodles, Triple XXX, Cap’n Crunch) assembled at MASTODON with TBTF coming in hot just as we were talking through the plans. The persistent thick fog at the AO meant that the initial plan for a Mata Mile was scrapped because it would have required some visibility across the lake. In it’s place we opted for the Hammer workout with a sandbag swap in place of buddy carrys.

  • 400m Buddy or Sandbag carry
  • Split the Reps on the following:
    • 300 ruck swings
    • 300 sit-ups (no ruck)
    • 200 lunges
    • 200 overhead press
  • 400m Buddy or Sandbag carry

It was an interesting Ruck workout to only cover .5 miles, but it filled the time and brought the sweat. Mission accomplished.

COR/NOR/COT:Β prayers for all present for the ability to focus and do good work this week, but esp. Noodles who is working through some specific challenges right now

8.10.19 – JΓ€zz HΓ€ndz VQ: “Game of Life: Introduction of the ‘Death Die’ “

Official Backblast for previous Saturday, August 10, 2019 with YHC @JΓ€zz HΓ€ndz VQ-ing it up! It’s about time, right fellas?

I like to call this one:

“Game of Life: Introduction of the ‘Death Die'”

🎲πŸ”₯

5 PAX (@Captain Crunch (AJ), @Archive, @F3Banks, @TBTF, and @JΓ€zz HΓ€ndz) posted at MASTO-CON for some fun and games on this cool yet humid morning. As VQIC, yours truly lead the workout in true @JΓ€zz HΓ€ndz fashion as a *co-op board game* with a twist: the introduction of a new way of manipulating the punishments at randomβ€”the “Death Die.” This new tool to be used at will by any future PAX on Q is a half-coupon adorned with dice pips, and makes for an interesting dynamic to beat down the PAX, or *perhaps* offer some occasional relief…maybe.

*WOR* in the parking lot, in cadence:

β€’ 7x Motivators

β€’ 25 Mountain Man Poopers (sped up)

*Thang 1: “Double Trouble”* _(Co-op Strategy, β€œHouse Rules” Edition)_

β™Ÿβ™Ÿβ™Ÿβ™Ÿβ™Ÿ

Starting on the west end of Mastodon, we prepared to do the short circuit around the board (the park path) heading north + east, following the lamp posts as our β€œspaces” for each successive Double Trouble exercise. We grabbed a token (full sized coupon) to carry around the board as a team, rotating who carried at each lamp post. There were 20 spaces total, each space doubling the exercise from the space before. Objective is to complete circuit around board and bring the token back to its home.

_Breakdown of each spaces exercises:_

β€’ Spaces 1-4: Burpees (1x, 2x, 4x, 8x)

β€’ Spaces 5-8: Monkey Humpers (2x, 4x, 8x, 16x)

β€’ Spaces 9-12: Lunges: (3x, 6x, 12x, 24x)

β€’ Spaces 13-16: Imperial Walkers: (4x, 8x, 16x, 32x)

β€’ Spaces 17-20: LBCs: (5x, 10x, 20x, 40x)

Prior to embarking, however, we rolled the Death Die. @F3Banks rolled a *2* for the group, which meant every _human_ we passed along the way caused the group to *_go back 2 spaces_* and repeat that space’s exercise, then continue on as normal. If the humans were accompanied by an *odd* number of dogs, PAX had to *_double_* the amount of spaces to double back on. *Even* number of dogs: _skip ahead one space._ (This never happened).

*Summary of Rules* (per @F3Banks’ β€œ2” roll):

β€’ 1 human: back 2 spaces.

β€’ 2 humans: back 4 spaces.

β€’ 3 humans: back 6 spaces.

β€’ 1 human + 1 or 3 dogs: back 4 spaces.

β€’ 1 human + 2 or 4 dogs, BONUS: skip the next space.

PAX counted off, and the token and death die passed around the group in numerical order at each lamp post. Since YHC hadn’t play tested this particular game of horrors prior to his actual introduction to the other PAX, we had a bit of *β€œtrouble”* keeping up with the rules as we encountered more humans and dogs than expected. Math and Monkey Humpers don’t always go well together, eitherβ€”despite the blood rush to the head.

After getting caught in a particularly nasty death loop in spaces 9-12 due to every human in the park and their little dogs too converging at our exact location all at once, @Captain Crunch (AJ) suggested a set of *House Rules*: roll the Death Die when you pass a human: *1-3*=PAX don’t do the penalty of going back X spaces, while *4-6*=we do the penalty. After roughly 90 lunges without relief (prior to induction of house rules), we finally made it to the Walkers and LBCs, only stumbling upon 1 or 2 penalty humans for the remaining duration.

The beauty of the Death Die and Double Trouble is, if you’ve got a handful of different exercises planned (abs, legs, upper, lower, etc), this randomness can turn a sample selection of exercises into a full out LUNGE FEST and YHC hasn’t been able to walk up stairs for the past 3 days thanks to this factor.

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ YHC/VQIC: “I’ll have a little of everything please.”

πŸ¦Ήβ€β™‚οΈ 🎲 Death Die and passers-by: “YOUR LEGS WON’T LAST THE HOUR!”

Upon reaching the 20th space, we grabbed the token and completed its journey around the board back to its starting location, via moseying to the bottom of the hill for a quick water break and on to our next game.

*Thang 2: “Dungeons and Dragons”*

πŸ‰πŸ‰πŸ‰πŸ‰πŸ‰

A short but potentially bitter “game.” In this instance, the Death Die was moderately kind to us.

*The Rules:*

β€’ PAX roll *_2D6 + 4 with advantage,_* and do that many *Welsh Dragons* (a real F3 exercise! See below) across the field OYO.

Β  Β  – (laymen terms: roll 2 death dice, take the lower of the two numbers, and add 4 for your rep count.)

@F3Banks and @Captain Crunch (AJ) each happened to roll a *3*, so with no decision-making necessary, we got on our hands and toes and Welsh Dragon crawled across the field for 7 reps.

Here’s the F3 definition of a Welsh Dragon:

Remain in _[high]_ plank position the whole time. Bear crawl forward 4 steps, do 1 merkin, 1 plank jack, and tap the back of each shoulder 1 time. Repeat, adding 1 rep to each exercise each time – bear crawl forward 4 steps, do 2 merkins, 2 plank jacks, 2 sets of back of shoulder taps… etc. Go until you get to 10 reps each, you’ve covered 30-50 feet, or until your arms fall off – whichever comes first.

Our Death Die dictated a rep count of 7, which is right around the time it really started to burn. Next time YHC will tweak the rules so PAX have to push through the burn instead of ending it there.

*Thang 3: Death Deck a la Fire Drill*

πŸƒπŸ”₯πŸš¨πŸ§―πŸƒ

Each PAX drew 2 cards from the F3 exercise death deck (thanks to @Captain Crunch (AJ) for bringing it along). First card: your exercise. Second card: the rep count. Stood in a circle and did high knees (fire drill style) between each PAX calling their exercise for the group. Can’t remember exactly what was drawn and called, but it involved a DIY version of heels to the sky, butt kicks, a lap around the hill, and 100x high knees millennial style to wrap it up.

*6MoM:*

β€’ Side planks

β€’ Guantanamo (2x)

PAX stashed the newly forged Death Die in a secure location (is it secret? Is it safe?), and did an AYG sprint to the flag for COT, followed by victory cinnamon rolls and coffee, and strange and enlightening discussion of the origins of the work “merkins.” Warning: NSFW.

NOR COR COT

β€’ Crunch recovering health

β€’ Archive job hunt

β€’ Jazz hands M’s job hunt

I was humbled and honored to serve as Q for first time! Surprisingly sore despite feeling like the pain wasn’t brought as hard as usual (all those lunges!). I know I’ll Q again soon, and I’ll hopefully give @F3Banks something to complain about eventually πŸ˜‰
