05.23.2020 – Bridges are Hot Lava

It was a beautiful day at the AO, and finally the warm weather is arriving in Wheaton. 4 PAX showed up for this mornings beat down, including the triumphant return of TBTF! (Archive, Katniss, TBTF, Banks) After the workouts have been amped up recently, YHC felt it was necessary to keep the pain train coming.

Warm-O-Rama:

  • 7x Motivators
  • 15x Tin Soldiers

The Thang:

We took a tour of AO Mastodon, but added a wrinkle that all bridges had to be crossed without using your feet. Most PAX chose Balls to the Wall to cross, but Katniss did get creative on bridge #4 and try crossing on top of the railing. Due to this wrinkle, we deemed the bridges “Hot Lava”, and thus the workout had a name!

  • We started with Route 121. Starting at a lamppost, do 1 burpee and then mosey to the next lamppost. Continue this and increase burpees up to 11, and then work your way back down to 1.
  • We then moseyed to the Dan Taylor stretch and completed Dan Taylors up to 8: 1 Squat:4 Lunges, 2 Squats:8 Lunges,…., 8 Squats:32 Lunges
  • Next we moseyed back to the trail and completed a set of 11’s. 1 Merkin: 10 Star Jumps (For Katniss), 2 Merkins:9 Star Jumps,…, 10 Merkins: 1 Star Jump
  • Then we moseyed back to the start and completed 4 rounds of Monkey Humpers

6 MOM:

For Mary, we went around the circle and had each PAX call an exercise of their choosing:

  • 15x Gas Pumps IC
  • 25x LBC’s
  • 25x American Hammer IC
  • 25x Oblique LBC’s IC, 2x one for each side

COR/NOR/COT:

Prayers for all of those who could not be there with us. Continued prayers as things begin to open to make the right decisions for our families and help us ease back into work, etc. and help us to find our new routines. Prayers and praise for E-learning coming to an end.

Moleskin:

Today’s workout was hard, and not something that I would ever complete on my own without the other PAX there to push me. We have all gotten a little soft, both physically and mentally. It is good to get out there and push past our comfort zones and prove to ourselves we can do it. Putting the time in and pushing through the pain makes everything else we have to tackle in our everyday lives seem that much more doable. Keep your heads up men and keep moving forward. If you aren’t able to join us at the AO, keep pushing yourselves on your own until the world returns to a little more normality. Thankful for this group and the structure and change of pace it provides in our otherwise crazy lives.

5/14/20 Ruck Surprise

5 PAX for a surprise ruck day workout. Archive QIC, Banks, Captain Crunch, Gummi Bear, Shiplap.

WOR- 6x Motivators

The Thang: Base Camp
5 stations- complete reps then shuffle between each station (stations should be 25 yards apart), in person each PAX should call out at a safe distance for other PAX to move to the next station.Stations:
12x Burpees (ruck on)
24x Merkins (ruck on)
48x LBCs (ruck overhead)
Hold Reverse Plank (90 seconds or until relieved)
Getups

Repeato for 35 minutes.Finish with Boat/Canoe

No big Moleskine for this one: it was very wet and uncomfortable. So thankful for the PAX to keep pushing me forward.

05.11.2020 – Just Rucking

It was a chilly morning at the AO, but 3 faithful PAX (Gummibear, Shiplap, Banks) showed up for what was billed as a simple ruck day. It is tough to follow a backblast as robust and colorful as the one Gummibear previously posted, so I will keep this one simple. We showed up, stretched on our own, and then rucked 3 miles, capping it all off with 20 Merkins for good measure. It was good to be out in the gloom with these other HIM and talk about whatever is on our minds as we were rucking, it represented a good break from all that is going on in our lives. Prayers for those who could not be with us, and for the coming week ahead.

05.05.2020 The Return of Courage In Numbers.

It was a misty, moist, may morning, but it brought with it memories of march, the march we missed meeting together. Molecules of water fell upon us gently, to encourage us that spring is upon us, but the sub forty degree temperature, seemed to be old man winter saying he is not far behind and may appear again at his leisure. It was gloomy, but the hints of dawn emboldened us. We were few, but we were not one; a change we had been longing for, a desire that had been reverberating through us during each merkin and squat we had accomplished alone, in our respective homes over the last forty five days. A cry, a calling, a chant, that seemed to echo in the background of every footfall during our many solo runs we had trudged through.

It was good to return, and yet it was sad. We three, we happy company, but it was bittersweet. For, deep down in our loins, we knew, that less than two months ago the world was a different place. We knew there would have been at least five or six more of our brethren at our side on a morning such as this. We miss them. The world, has changed. The hour seems bleak. But hope shines through. All is not lost. We are more serious now, we are no longer as care free, we hesitate a bit, we pause. But despite this Banks still jokes. Shiplap still laughs. Times are different, but hope endures. It is good to be together again, despite the literal physical distance of six feet or more between one another.

The Q was not early, but he was not late. He arrived precisely when he meant to. He was punctual, and that is all some hope for from this particular Q.

We three began with a nice warm up of:

20 I/C Bend & Reaches

25 I/C Squats

10 I/C Merkins

The Thang:

We then moseyed to the nearest bridge on the west side of the the pond, where the dandelions grow, where the tall grasses rustle, where you can see the picturesque view of Rosie’s in the distance; a beacon of hope reminding us that some day we may again congregate for a cold refreshing beer, together. This is where we began the simple trek. Do you know the bridge now? Can you picture it? Good, it is important that you know exactly where you are.

The Q does not boast of possessing a creative mind in the vein of Hotbox, or dare I say Noodles. He knows his limits, knows that he most likely shant ever lead a Q with a theme or story line. Knowing himself, and being quite sick of doing simplistic static exercises in the confines of his living room, as not wanting to be a spectacle to the neighborhood, the Q had chosen his exercises carefully; movements that he has not attempted in some time nor would attempt without being in a group where, for some reason it is far less scary to look silly.

Thang:

From The west bridge to The intersection nearest the pool building we joyfully and gleefully cycled through the following, as the pitter patter of rain drops fell upon our noses:

Bear Crawls

Crab Walks

Lunges

There is no limit on how long you may go before switching which of the three you do, But you must cycle through in order, and each time you switch to a different exercise you must stop and do five burpees, prior to making the switch.

Upon reaching our destination we mosyed back to the flag, doing some one legged jumps along the way.

NOT/COT- First actual meeting of multiple members since the stay at home order. Good to be back, while still keeping our distance.

3.17.20 – St Patty’s Day Beatdown

It was a beautiful morning at AO Mastodon, and as weather is warming up, more legs are being shown off! 5 faithful PAX (Shiplap, Dovetail, Katniss, Captain Crunch, Banks) showed up to see what festivities were in store.

Warm-O-Rama:

  • 7x Motivators
  • 15x Tin Soldiers
  • 10x Merkins IC

The Thang:

  • Burpee Mile – 12 Burpees, run 1/4 mile. Repeat for a total of 48 Burpees & 1+ mi run
  • Interval Workout – Intervals set up for every 2 min, complete the following exercises: Pull-ups, Burpees, Merkins, Dips. Start at 5, build to 10, and back down to 5. For a total of 80 of each. It should be noted that I heard several mumblings about wanting to puke in the middle of this…

COR/NOR/COT:

Prayers for those who could not be there, for our country and everyone to keep their sanity in this time of need. Take advantage of the time at home with families to do things you have not done in a while. Thankful for this group to help bring some normalcy to our lives.

3.12.20 – A Day at the Arcade REMASTERED

Pi Day Beatdown

While the world begins to hunker down and hide from each other the PAX of AO Mastodon got out in the world to push themselves to become a better, stronger HIM than we woke up that morning. 8 PAX were in attendance: Shiplap, Archive, Banks, Captain Crunch, Katniss, Jazz Hands, Noodles, and TBTF.

WoR: We got things started with Motivators x7 (where I lost count several times, pretty sure we did the set of 4 twice), The move that has many names but I will call it AbeVigotas x15, and Ballerina Toe Squats x15.

Thang(s): It was a bit of an impromptu/make it up as we go Q but we started with a “follow the leader” mosey towards the playground, down the rock wall slides, toe taps along the brick retaining wall from the COOTES to the zip line, jog through the picnic area, up and over a few picnic tables, then we stopped for a couple minutes of dips. We moseyed on for a few minutes where we stopped and circled up for a minute of SSHs where PAX took turns SSH’ing in the center of the circle and Shiplap even pulled off an impressive cartwheel/upside down SSH. We then moseyed along the path and eventually ended up at the park equipment that looked like a ladder so we obviously climbed it, jumped down, and planked for a bit. Next we moseyed to the first bridge, lunged across it and circled up for 2 minutes of Merkins (the first of a ton of Merkins on the day). We backwards shuffled for a while then stopped for arm circles/seal claps, moseyed some more then stopped for 2 minutes of squats, moseyed some more then stopped for 2 minutes of burpees (Noodles may deny it but I really thought he requested them). We then moseyed to the coupons doing some mountain climbers and jump squats along the way based on the people/dogs we passed. Once we got to the coupon area we did a round of the beatdown deck without coupons. We then grabbed coupons and did an AO Mastodon original “Rock Around The Block” which is 10 incline merkins with coupon, 10 merkins with right hand on coupon, 10 derkins (merkin/plank walk to position), and 10 merkins with left hand on the coupon at which time I believe we were about all at the point of merkins failure. We then did another quick round of the beatdown deck utilizing the coupon were we could. We put the coupons back and moseyed to the flag.

CoT:

Prayers for the group, families, and society in general as we work through the Corona Virus pandemic, prayers for people to maintain calm and minimize anxiety in these trying times, prayers for our parents/grandparents who may be in a more risky age range of the current pandemic, prayers for the families stuck at home for 3-4 weeks with no school/open activities for kids.

Agassis Boot-camp 03/10/2020

After a night washing the AO was primed ready for action. Per usual Ship Lap unzipped his tent and Gummybear was rolling in hot with the 5-0 nearby keeping a lookout for hoodlums. Straight outta the fartsack Captain Crunch arrived with the shovel flag waving proud while Banks was alarmed from his alarm this fine morning…
